What is 'innate intelligence? It is a knowing. It is the inborn ability that allows the body to heal and is continuously working to keep us balanced, both internally and externally. While the heart is known as the body's pumping station, it also has 40,000 neurons, much like the ones in our brain. In actuality, the heart sends more signals to the brain than the brain sends to the heart.
And, the heart messages have a significant effect on the brain's functions – it influences emotional processes and other higher cognitive faculties (eg memory, perception, attention, and problem-solving). The brain is constantly and continuously responding to the heart.

The resting heart rhythm was once believed to be like a living metronome, beating at a regular and steady pace. With up-to-date equipment and data collections, we know this is not an accurate picture. The rhythms of healthy hearts at rest are surprisingly irregular, with the intervals between heartbeats ever changing. This naturally occurring variation in rate is called heart rate variability or HRV and is the key to self control, establishing personal resilience, happiness, and stress management.
Our lives are in constant stress states that build upon each other as the day progresses. When the heart's patterns become erratic, corresponding neural signals to the brain inhibit higher cognitive function, meaning there is decreased memory, lower perceptions, difficulty holding attention, and limitations in problem-solving. Those abilities that define us as 'higher beings' like thinking clearly, remembering, learning, reasoning, and decision making becomes severely compromised during stressful situations. The region in our brain that allows the left and right hemispheres to communicate well, referred to as the corpus callosum, remains small and underdeveloped. Negative emotions contribute to a disordered heart rhythm and have a direct adverse effect on the brain, reinforcing the experience of stress.

Take a breath in.
Notice the breath enter your nose and flow down into your chest.
If it helps you to keep focus, raise your hand and gently place it on your breastbone.
Now breathe out.
Feel your ribs lower slightly as you follow the breath leaving.
Pay close attention to the desire to breathe in again, and wait...
Take another breath in, a bit slower than usual.
Feel your ribs raise slightly as the air rushes into your lungs.
Imagine you have the ability to inhale without limit.
Maintain the focus of your attention on the air as you fill up, adding a bit more, and still more...
And just when you find there is no more to receive, breathe out.
Keep your mind on the air as it flows out of your nostrils.
Follow the breath with your mind as you breathe in again.
And out again.
Continue, following your breath - in and out.
